Class 12 Physics Practical No 7 : Current Sensitivity Solutions Maharashtra Board
[Page No 59]
Aim :
To determine the current sensitivity of a moving coil galvanometer
Apparatus :
Moving coil table galvanometer, cell, plug key, reversing key, high resistance box, connecting wires etc.
Formula :
i) S = θ/Ig
Ig = Current through galvanometer
S = Current Sensitivity
θ = deflection in galvanometer
Circuit Diagram :
Observations :
1) Resistance of galvanometer (G) = 100 Ω.
2) E.M.F. of cell (E) = 1.5 volt.

Current Sensitivity S = θ/IG div/A |
Mean S div/A |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
1 | 7000 | 220 | 220*10-6 | 22 | 100000 | 0.961*105 div/A |
2 | 9000 | 180 | 180*10-6 | 17 | 94400 | |
3 | 12000 | 130 | 130*10-6 | 13 | 100000 | |
4 | 16000 | 100 | 100*10-6 | 9 | 90000 |
Calculations :
Current sensitivity of galvanometer S = θ/Ig = 0.961*10⁵ div/A
Result :
Current sensitivity of a moving coil table galvanometer, (S)
S = 0.961*10⁵ div/Amp. (By calculation)
S = 96550 div/Amp. (By graph)
Precautions :
i) Check that all connection at terminal screws are tight.
ii) Check that key (K) and key (K1) are tight.
iii) Check that all keys in resistance box are tight except which you remove from the resistance box.
iv) Check that deflection in the galvanometer when you remove resistance from the resistance box.
v) Pass the current through circuit only at the time of observations.
vi) Always adjust the resistance in the box so that the pointer galvanometer does not go out of the scale.

Questions :
1) Define current sensitivity of the galvanometer.
Ans : Current sensitivity of a galvanometer refers to the amount of deflection produced on its scale per unit of current flowing through it. It is a measure of the galvanometer's responsiveness to changes in current and is usually expressed in terms of the angle of deflection per unit of current (e.g., degrees per microampere or radians per milliampere).
2) State the factors on which current sensitivity depends.
Ans : The current sensitivity of a galvanometer depends on the strength of the magnetic field within the coil, the number of turns in the coil, and the moment of inertia of the galvanometer's moving parts. Increasing the magnetic field strength or the number of turns in the coil enhances the sensitivity, while reducing the moment of inertia improves the current sensitivity.
3) How can the current sensitivity increase?
Ans : To increase the current sensitivity of a galvanometer, you can:
Increase the number of turns in the coil, which strengthens the magnetic field and results in greater deflection for the same amount of current. Reduce the moment of inertia of the galvanometer's moving parts, making it more responsive to changes in current and increasing its sensitivity.
