Spotting Practical Number 3: Study of Imbibition using dried seeds/raisins
B. DEMONSTRATION EXPERIMENTS (Spotting)
3. Study of Imbibition using dried seeds/raisins.
Aim :- To study the imbibition using seeds or raisins.
Requirements :- Water, beaker, dry seeds or raisins, etc.
Principle :- Imbibition is adsorption of water or any other solvent without forming a solution. The different hydrophilic substances present in plant cells or cell wall, imbibe water.
Figure :-
Procedure :-
• Take some dry seeds or raisins in a beaker or Petri dish or bowl.
• Add ample amount of water in it.
• Keep the set up for a few hours and observe the change in seeds or raisins.
Observation :- The seeds or raisins kept or soaked in water show change in their volume showing swollen structure and seed coat/ raisins shows softening.
Conclusion :- The increase in size of the raisins is due to the process of imbibition, where they absorb water. The amount of water absorbed can be determined by measuring the difference in mass between the dry raisins and the swollen raisins.
Questions
1. What is an imbibition?
Ans :- Imbibition is the process by which a substance, such as a seed, absorbs water. During this process, the substance swells as it takes up water, but no new substances are formed.
2. Distinguish between diffusion and imbibition.
Ans :- Diffusion is the movement of molecules from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration. In contrast, imbibition is the process where hydrophilic substances swell as they absorb water.
3. What will be the result if fresh grapes fruit are dipped for sometime in a strong salt solution?
Ans :- If fresh grapes are dipped in a strong salt solution, the water inside the grapes will move out due to exosmosis. This causes the grapes to shrink.
4. Define and or explain: a. exosmosis b. endosmosis
Ans :- a. Exosmosis is the movement of water out of a cell when the cell is placed in a hypertonic solution.
b. Endosmosis is the movement of water into a cell when the cell is placed in a hypotonic solution.
5. Give any two examples of imbibition in day to day life.
Ans :- 1. Dry wood absorbs water and swells when it rains.
2. Seeds absorb water from the soil and swell before germinating.
